A BlackDoctor Initiative

More than
the game.
A future
in health.

Hoops to Healthcare uses basketball as the entry point to expose young Black men to the limitless opportunities available across healthcare — from medicine and nursing to biotech, AI, and health entrepreneurship.

Program Overview

A national workforce pipeline, born on the court.

Hoops to Healthcare is a national youth workforce development initiative created by BlackDoctor — the leading digital health and wellness platform serving the Black community.

The program leverages the influence of current and former professional basketball players to inspire Black boys to see careers in healthcare as achievable, rewarding, and impactful.

Basketball is often the most visible career aspiration. Hoops to Healthcare broadens that vision — introducing hundreds of careers across medicine, nursing, biotech, medical devices, healthcare technology, research, public health, pharmaceuticals, and health entrepreneurship.

Why It Matters

Every young athlete should have another dream.

Basketball should always be encouraged — but the odds are steep, and healthcare is one of America's fastest-growing industries. The numbers tell the story.

The Challenge

Black men remain underrepresented across healthcare.

Black physicians account for only about 5% of U.S. physicians, while Black Americans make up roughly 13–14% of the population. Representation is similarly limited in pharmacy, biotechnology leadership, clinical research, and healthcare technology.

Increasing representation is critical. Diverse healthcare professionals build trust, improve communication, and expand access to care in the communities that need it most.

To inspire one million Black boys to explore careers in healthcare — and create the next generation of Black healthcare leaders.
